Over breakfast, Jess watches me closely, and despite the crazy feelings inside, I’m still in control enough to mask everything. Coyote, too, keeps his expression neutral, hiding his want of me from our companions. Not for the first time, I wonder what happened in his past to make him the man he is. Clearly, something life altering.

While we eat, by unspoken consent, we don’t discuss what we’ll do when we reach Santa Fe. After the dishes are removed, Joker says, “No one check out yet. We gotta sort out a plan and I want to do it here rather than Santa Fe.”

“No problem,” Rocky says as he grins at Jess. “But not in our room. It’s a mess.”

Trigger snorts. “Not in my room either.” He clears his throat. “I still got company.”

Joker eyes him with deadly intent. “Can’t you keep your fucking dick in your pants for 48 hours? We’re trying to stay low profile.”

“We’re riding bikes and wearing cuts. How’s that keepin’ a low profile?” He swallows his irritation as he stands, replacing it with his trademark smirk. “Need a smoke and then I’ll ask the girls to leave.”

“Jesus, you’ve got two in there.” Coyote shakes his head.

“Three – they were friends. Didn’t seem gentlemanly to break up the set.”

Joker tells him to fuck off with a snarl.

After Trigger’s gone, the VP says to Coyote, “Your room?”

I clear my throat. “No.” I try to keep my voice modulated so I don’t reveal the sudden case of butterflies inside me.

The remaining four turn to me with various degrees of interest. Of course, Coyote’s gaze is the most intense.

“Why not?” Joker asks in the same tone and volume of voice he used with Trigger. He seems belligerent, I suspect because he didn’t get his way with Trigger.

Coyote tenses. “Fuck off, Joker.”

Joker bristles and opens his mouth to say something, but I head him off.

“Because.” I’m not a holder of eyes, especially men, so I look Joker in the nose as I defy his aggression.

Joker snorts. “That ain’t good enough.”

This time I do meet his gaze. “It’s good enough.”

“Stop,” Coyote says in a tone full of threat, though I’m not sure he’s addressing me or his VP. We both ignore him.

Joker comes back at me as I expected. “You’d be dead by now if Coyote didn’t save your sorry ass.”

“Do you think I care?”

That shuts him down. He rolls his eyes. “I can’t deal with this bullshit.” He stands. “Let’s get this shitshow over with. Pack up and meet in my room in a half-hour.”

Then he stalks away without waiting for our acknowledgement.
