Over breakfast, Jess watches me closely, and despite the crazy feelings inside, Iâm still in control enough to mask everything. Coyote, too, keeps his expression neutral, hiding his want of me from our companions. Not for the first time, I wonder what happened in his past to make him the man he is. Clearly, something life altering.
While we eat, by unspoken consent, we donât discuss what weâll do when we reach Santa Fe. After the dishes are removed, Joker says, âNo one check out yet. We gotta sort out a plan and I want to do it here rather than Santa Fe.â
âNo problem,â Rocky says as he grins at Jess. âBut not in our room. Itâs a mess.â
Trigger snorts. âNot in my room either.â He clears his throat. âI still got company.â
Joker eyes him with deadly intent. âCanât you keep your fucking dick in your pants for 48 hours? Weâre trying to stay low profile.â
âWeâre riding bikes and wearing cuts. Howâs that keepinâ a low profile?â He swallows his irritation as he stands, replacing it with his trademark smirk. âNeed a smoke and then Iâll ask the girls to leave.â
âJesus, youâve got two in there.â Coyote shakes his head.
âThree â they were friends. Didnât seem gentlemanly to break up the set.â
Joker tells him to fuck off with a snarl.
After Triggerâs gone, the VP says to Coyote, âYour room?â
I clear my throat. âNo.â I try to keep my voice modulated so I donât reveal the sudden case of butterflies inside me.
The remaining four turn to me with various degrees of interest. Of course, Coyoteâs gaze is the most intense.
âWhy not?â Joker asks in the same tone and volume of voice he used with Trigger. He seems belligerent, I suspect because he didnât get his way with Trigger.
Coyote tenses. âFuck off, Joker.â
Joker bristles and opens his mouth to say something, but I head him off.
âBecause.â Iâm not a holder of eyes, especially men, so I look Joker in the nose as I defy his aggression.
Joker snorts. âThat ainât good enough.â
This time I do meet his gaze. âItâs good enough.â
âStop,â Coyote says in a tone full of threat, though Iâm not sure heâs addressing me or his VP. We both ignore him.
Joker comes back at me as I expected. âYouâd be dead by now if Coyote didnât save your sorry ass.â
âDo you think I care?â
That shuts him down. He rolls his eyes. âI canât deal with this bullshit.â He stands. âLetâs get this shitshow over with. Pack up and meet in my room in a half-hour.â
Then he stalks away without waiting for our acknowledgement.
